grinder and garlic bread from mizza’s pizza

If you ask any boarding school student in the topmost corner of Northwest CT where they like to order food from the most, the most common answer would be Mizza’s Pizza. This is a cult favorite at Hotchkiss, and for good reason. The pizza is solid, and the subs are actually great, but, most importantly, Mizza’s is reliable.

There’s nothing quite like walking into Mizza’s Pizza after a long stretch of school with my parents, tired from a meet or a long run, about to leave for a two-week-long vacation. It’s not exactly an old-timey joint, but the vibes are very welcoming and warm. The walls are decorated with photos of patrons, like in any good pizza restaurant. The booths are comfortable, and the drinks are in those Pepsi cups. You know the ones I’m talking about: red, plastic, grainy except for a smooth section about an inch think at the top. The classic pizza cups. I’m saying all of this to illustrate to you what Mizza’s represents to the average Hotchkiss student, even if most of them haven’t ever been inside: comfortability. I was hungry, and I wanted to be comfortable; so, Nic and I ordered from Mizza’s. We ordered a half meatball parm grinder, a half chicken parm grinder, and garlic bread. It was all great.

The cheesy garlic bread at Mizza’s is fantastic. The cheese is very nicely melted, and they don’t skimp you on it. The bread is buttered to perfection, and toasted well. The garlic, finally, tastes so well with the butter and the cheese that I almost think Mizza’s cracked some sort of culinary mystery. I love this bread.

Not pictured: chicken parm sub.

Maybe I was just hungry, but this was a delicious sub. It was very filling. There was, once again, ample, well-melted cheese. The sauce was a pretty average marinara sauce. The chicken was very good, and the meatballs, while not nearly as tasty, were very well-portioned. Overall, I really enjoyed this meal.
